The Romanov dynasty began in 1613 with Tsar Mikhail Romanov. He was the grand-nephew of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. By the time the crown passed to Nicholas II nearly three hundred years later, it was very unstable. In the 1860s, Alexander II freed the serfs, becoming known as the Tsar-Liberator. The serfs eventually became upset at the monarchy's spelendor and a lot of them supported the communists. Many events, including the Russo-Japenese War, Bloody Sunday, and WWI, would cause Nicholas II to become very hated, which would lead to the downfall of the monarchy and the end of the Romanov dynasty.
